How To Make A Textured Colour Block Crochet Blanket

Hello friends.  I recently noticed that the yarn I used for this crochet baby blanket, had been discontinued.  It's a real shame, as the mix of cotton and acrylic made such a beautiful squishy yarn.  So, I thought it was time that this pattern had an update.  I made the blanket again with new yarn and also added more sizes and other helpful information too.  I hope you like the new version...

This pattern is crocheted entirely in Wattle Stitch.  I love the texture and it is so quick and easy to make.  A beginner crocheter can easily follow this pattern and if these colours aren't your cup of tea, it would look great in so many other colour combinations.  Just pick 3 colours you love for a colour block effect or you could even use a self striping or cake yarn.  This blanket here is also another quick and easy make.

Now this pattern was originaly designed as a baby blanket and the previous one was gifted to my brothers son when he was a baby, but what if you don't want or need a baby blanket?  Well I got you covered!  This crochet pattern now comes in 6 sizes including a throw and twin bed size.  Need a custom size?  We have that covered too!

Pattern Notes

  • Read pattern in its entirety before starting
  • US terms used throught
  • The stitch in this pattern is called Wattle Stitch
  • The yarn used is Aran weight this is roughly the equivalent of Worsted
  • Change colour by pulling new colour through last st of row
  • Crochet colours in order, Washed Teal, Paper White & Taupe
  • For custom sizes chain a multiple of 3

Start Crocheting Here...

With Washed Teal ch required number for size

Row 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, ch1, dc in same st, *Sk2 ch, [sc, ch1, dc] in next ch* repeat from *to* until last 3 chs, sk2 chs, hdc in last ch.  Turn.

Row 2 Ch1, *[sc, ch1, dc] in next ch sp* repeat from *to* across, hdc in top ch1 from previous row. Turn.

Repeat row 2 changing colour each time section length is met until all 3 colour sections are complete and blanket is required length.  Fasten off and weave in ends.  Block if required.

Single Crochet Border

While this blanket does not need a border, if you really feel you want one, or your edges need a little neatening, sc evenly around your blanket, changing colours when necessary to keep colour block effect correct.  How many sts you work will depend on your tension.  If your border makes your edges “wavy” you have too many sts, if your sides are “pulling in” you have too few, adjust accordingly.

Try this…

Along sides 2sc around each hdc post, sc in side of each turning ch, sc in each st across top, sc in each st across bottom, 1sc in each corner.

The Dolly Stripe Blanket - Pretty linen stitch blanket inspired by sweets from my childhood...

Hello friends.  I have a new pattern to share with you today, this pretty striped baby blanket.  The blanket is made from 100% cotton yarn making if perfect for baby in spring and summer or you could make a slightly larger blanket for a throw.  This would make a great picnic blanket if made in a larger size.

The colours I chose for this blanket were inspired by the Dolly Mixture sweets my mum used to buy us when we were children.  If you are from the UK perhaps you had them too.  You could of course use any colours for your blanket, a great opportunity to use up your stash.

Dolly Mixtures...

The Dolly Stripe

Materials

Aran / worsted cotton yarn 500g (750m) in white and 20g (15m) each in pink, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, brown
5mm hook
Darning needle

Size

Appros. 100cm (39 inches) x 70cm (27 inches)

Ability

Easy

Abbreviations US Terms (UK conversion)

sc - single crochet (double crochet)
ch – chain
sp - space
st(s) - stitch(es)
sl st - slip stitch
sk - skip

Other notes:  Pretty Linen Stitch blanket, the colours in the stripes were inspired by the Dolly Mixture sweets we used to have as a child.  I used Drops Paris to make my blanket in colours, White, Light Pink, Light Turquoise, Strong Yellow, Pistachio, Apricot, Light Purple and Dark Beige.

When substituting yarns, make sure to choose a yarn of the same weight.  The blanket is worked back and forth in rows.  Change colours by pulling the new yarn through the last stitch of previous row.  Do not fasten off the white, carry up side of work.

Colour sequence (repeat twice)

8 rows white
2 rows pink
8 rows white
2 rows blue
8 rows white
2 rows yellow
8 rows white
2 rows green
8 rows white
2 rows orange
8 rows white
2 rows purple
8 rows white
2 rows brown

With mc, ch 116 (or desired width in multiples of 2)

Row 1 (commence colour sequence) Sc in 2nd ch from hook, [ch1, sk1, sc in next st] repeat to end, turn.

Row 2 Ch2, [sc in next sp, ch1] repeat to last sp, sc in last sp, turn.

Repeat row 2 keeping colours correct, until you have worked through the colour sequence twice, finishing with a final 8 rows in white, or until blanket reaches desired length.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Linen Stitch Border

The border is a simple round of Linen Stitch.  Join mc anywhere along the top or bottom of blanket, [Sc, ch1] in each sp around the blanket.  In each corner [sc, ch1, sc], join with sl st to 1st sc.  Fasten off and weave in remaining ends.

I hope you enjoy this pattern and I will be back again very soon...

Take care

The Beginners Blanket - Just learned to crochet and ready to make your first blanket? This is the pattern for you...

Everyone loves a granny square and if you know me, you know, they are my favourite things to crochet.   I just love granny square blankets.  Whether they are lots of squares joined together, or one giant granny square.   Crochet squares are also great for beginners too and if you have learned the basic stitches and would like to make your first blanket, then this is the one for you.  This granny square blanket was one of the first patterns that I wrote and was previously only available to buy in my Etsy store.  I hope you enjoy this free version.

Round 1 (right side) ch3, 2dc into ring, ch2, [ 3dc into ring, ch2] 3 times, join.  Turn.

Shell Edging

Optional – divide ribbon into 4 equal pieces and thread in between the stitches along the side of blanket and tie with a bow in each corner.

The pdf version also contains a second colourway and alternate border...

You can make this blanket bigger, just simply keep adding more rounds until you reach your desired size.  The Shell Edging must be made on an odd numbered round.  You can also easily substitute yarn too, just use the hook size recommended on the ball band.  Giant granny square blankets look fabulous crocheted in chunky yarn and make a great quick and easy project.
