Cozy crochet blanket

About the yarn: King Cole Stormy is a 100% acrylic, super chunky yarn.  One 100g ball is approx. 81m (88 yards) and recommends a 10mm hook.  When making substitutions, be sure to choose a yarn of a similar gauge.

Sizing:  May be easily adjusted for any size, yarn quantities must be adjusted accordingly.

Special Stitches: herringbone double crochet – yo, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop, pull 1st loop through 2nd loop on hook, yo and pull through 1st loop, yo and pull through remaining 2 loops.

Other notes:  Foundation row is worked into back bumps of the starting chain, it is recommended to use a larger hook for the starting chain (or chain very loosely) and then switch to recommended hook size.  Ch2 turning chain counts as hbdc throughout, make sure to work into the top of ch2 at end of each row as this can be easily missed.

Top Tip:  Make your tassels first to make sure you have enough yarn.

Video Tutorial

If you enjoyed the video I would love for you to like and subscribe to my channel, you can do so by choosing to watch on Youtube and don't forget to share with all your friends.  It really helps with the algorythm and will enable me to continue making free content for you to enjoy.

Ch 93 or number of chains needed for desired width.

Foundation row hbdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn.  (90 hbdc)

Row 1 ch2, hbdc in next and each st across, turn.

Repeat row 1 until piece measures 125cm or desired length, fasten off.

Border

With right side facing.  Join yarn with sc in top right corner, sc in each st to next corner, 3sc in this and each corner, sc evenly across each side, finishing with 2 sc in first corner, join with sl st to first sc.

When working the border if your edges start to look ruffled use less stitches, if the edge looks tight you need more stitches.

How many stitches you need will depend on your tension, 3 stitches for every 3 rows (at the sides) worked for me.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Stylish crocheted sofa throw with tassels

Tassels

Make 4 tassels and attach to corners.  I used a DVD case to measure my tassels with 50 wraps width wise for each tassel.  Take a darning needle and a length of yarn and take the yarn underneath the wraps at the top of the case and secure with a knot, leaving enough yarn to use the ends to attach to the blanket.  Cut the yarn wraps at the bottom of the case and slide off.  Taking another length of yarn tie around all strands about one inch from the top to form your tassel.  An entire 100g ball of yarn was used to make all 4.  See video for more details.

How To Make A Textured Colour Block Crochet Blanket

Hello friends.  I recently noticed that the yarn I used for this crochet baby blanket, had been discontinued.  It's a real shame, as the mix of cotton and acrylic made such a beautiful squishy yarn.  So, I thought it was time that this pattern had an update.  I made the blanket again with new yarn and also added more sizes and other helpful information too.  I hope you like the new version...

This pattern is crocheted entirely in Wattle Stitch.  I love the texture and it is so quick and easy to make.  A beginner crocheter can easily follow this pattern and if these colours aren't your cup of tea, it would look great in so many other colour combinations.  Just pick 3 colours you love for a colour block effect or you could even use a self striping or cake yarn.  This blanket here is also another quick and easy make.

Now this pattern was originaly designed as a baby blanket and the previous one was gifted to my brothers son when he was a baby, but what if you don't want or need a baby blanket?  Well I got you covered!  This crochet pattern now comes in 6 sizes including a throw and twin bed size.  Need a custom size?  We have that covered too!

About the yarn (contains affiliate links)

Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran is a 100% acrylic yarn and comes in a huge range of gorgeous colours.  The yarn is machine washable and comes in 100g balls.  Each ball has approximately 201 yards.

If you would like to make this in cotton yarn I recommend PaintboxYarns Cotton Aran in shades Paper White, Washed Teal and Elephant Grey.

If you fancy making this in wool, I recommend Cascade Yarns220 Superwash Merino in shades Summer Sky Heather, Tuffet and White

Pattern Notes

  • Read pattern in its entirety before starting
  • US terms used throught
  • The stitch in this pattern is called Wattle Stitch
  • The yarn used is Aran weight this is roughly the equivalent of Worsted
  • Change colour by pulling new colour through last st of row
  • Crochet colours in order, Washed Teal, Paper White & Taupe
  • For custom sizes chain a multiple of 3

Start Crocheting Here...

With Washed Teal ch required number for size

Row 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook, ch1, dc in same st, *Sk2 ch, [sc, ch1, dc] in next ch* repeat from *to* until last 3 chs, sk2 chs, hdc in last ch.  Turn.

Row 2 Ch1, *[sc, ch1, dc] in next ch sp* repeat from *to* across, hdc in top ch1 from previous row. Turn.

Repeat row 2 changing colour each time section length is met until all 3 colour sections are complete and blanket is required length.  Fasten off and weave in ends.  Block if required.

Single Crochet Border

While this blanket does not need a border, if you really feel you want one, or your edges need a little neatening, sc evenly around your blanket, changing colours when necessary to keep colour block effect correct.  How many sts you work will depend on your tension.  If your border makes your edges “wavy” you have too many sts, if your sides are “pulling in” you have too few, adjust accordingly.

Try this…

Along sides 2sc around each hdc post, sc in side of each turning ch, sc in each st across top, sc in each st across bottom, 1sc in each corner.

Crochet Along With Me... January

Hello everyone, well hasn't this month been a busy one.  We have started not one but two CAL's, and another one is on the way.  I will post more details about the next CAL in a later post.  I have also been trying to finish up last year's temperature blanket and been taking part in other CAL's and KAL's over at Ravelry, and not only that but also working on new pattern designs.  I have something coming up very soon for Valentine's too...

Crochet Along With Me... (January edition)

So January started off with a bang and with a new temperature blanket pattern. I must say, I am really enjoying crocheting these teeny, tiny, squares each day.  So far I am managing to stay on track, let's hope it stays that way.

First few squares

Mostly the weather has been very mild here.  Only over the last few days has the temperature dropped a little and I have the addition of some blue rounds to my squares.

Slowly getting bigger.  What I have loved the most is seeing everyone's progress in the Facebook group.  So many different colour pallets and styles of blankets, can't wait to see them all develope.

We also had the start of the Gorgeous Grannies Crochet Along, which can you believe it is almost over.  Only a few days left to go.  It has been so much fun making these granny squares every day.

The pile is getting bigger.  I will be posting joining and border ideas and the finished blanket next month.

I have also joined a dishcloth knit along and crochet along group on Ravelry.  They have new patterns each week to either knit or crochet and the group is very friendly.  If you like to make dishcloths or want to learn new stitch patterns then this is a great way to do it.

Here are my cloths for the first two weeks

This week's pattern is a Mystery Kal, with a new part of the pattern released each day.  Here's mine after clue one...

I have linked all the patterns and groups up top to make it easy for you to find everything, should you wish to join in.  I do hope you will.  Make sure you are subscribed, we have a new cal starting very soon and you won't want you to miss it.

See you soon...

The Hot & Cold Blanket - Join me in 2020 for a temperature blanket crochet along...

So you want to make a temperature blanket?  Well you have come to the right place.  We will be starting a new crochet along in 2020, with a brand new blanket design.  If you took part in this years crochet along, then you will be well on your way to completing your blanket.  If you didn't then you can read all about it here...  So what's new this year?  New colours, new design and a different approach to choosing temperatures, I give you, The Hot & Cold Blanket.

For those of you that have never made a temperature blanket before, the concept is simple.  You allow the daily temperature, to dictate what colour you will add to your blanket on that day.  There are many different styles and patterns to choose from.  Our pattern for 2019 was a stripy blanket, in Linen stitch using 20 different colours.  This year I will be using only 10 colours, with 1 extra colour for joining.

Hot And Cold Blanket

US Terms (UK conversion)
dc - double crochet (treble crochet)
sl st - slip stitch
ch - chain
sp - space

Materials

DK yarn in chosen colours
4mm (G) hook
Darning needle

I am using Scheepjes Softfun Denim in colours 500, 517, 516, 518, 520, 507, 504, 503, 505, 514 and Scheepjes Softfun 2510 for joining.  Don't you just hate it when yarn companies don't bother to name their colours?  This particular yarn is delicious though so I'll forgive Scheepjes just this once.  It's a mix of cotton and acrylic and is very soft.  I love the slight variation in colour throughout the yarn and am really looking forward to hooking this up.

This chart shows my chosen colours and allocated temperatures for 2020.  Depending on where you live, you might want to adjust the temperature range and colours.

Each day you will check your local weather station for both your highest and lowest temperatures of the day.  We are going to be making 3 round granny squares.  The first round will be your coolest temperature of the day, the second your highest and the third round will be your joining colour.  I recommend the join as you go method for this blanket.

Granny Square

Ch4 and join with sl st to form ring

Round 1 Ch3, 2dc into ring, ch2, [ 3dc into the ring, ch2] 3 times, join with  sl st to top  ch3 and fasten off if you are using a new colour for next round.

Round 2  Join new colour in any corner sp (or sl st to corner sp if working with same colour), ch3, 2dc into same sp, ch2, 3dc into same sp (corner formed), [ 3dc into next sp, ch2, 3dc into same sp] 3 times, join with sl st to top ch3 and fasten off.

Round 3  First square only, with joining colour, join in any corner sp, ch3, 2dc in same sp, ch2, 3dc in same sp, [3dc in next sp, 3dc in next sp, ch2, 3dc in same sp] 3 times, 3dc in next sp, join with sl st to the top ch3 and fasten off.

Round 3 Subsequent squares, complete using the join as you go method...

Join squares diagonally from corner to corner using the formula below.  Day 7 will be next to day 4 and so on...

The finished blanket will be 19 x 19 squares, making a total of 361.  We will use the last 5 day's colours to add to the border.

I will post updates as we go, along with a border pattern.  Why not join the CAL group.

Pin it for later...

I can't wait to get started and I do hope you will join me.

Happy hooking!
